Flamenco Centre Fosforito
Flamenco Centre Fosforito is located in one of the most interesting and visited places in our city, Potro Square, and more specifically, in the Posada del Potro (Inn of the Colt), a 16th-century building that has been declared Cultural Interest Heritage.
In the Middle Ages, Potro Square was the most important commercial hub in the city; in fact, that was the place where most traditional trades in Córdoba gathered. This promoted the establishment of numerous businesses (taverns, lodges, inns…) around the money exchange that generally took place there. This inn could have been a place frequented by criminals and women of suspicious reputation, which was, by the way, allowed by the authorities of the time.
With whitewashed façade and lintelled access, the inn has an irregular courtyard inside, almost rectangular, around which all the rooms (current halls of the museum) are arranged in two levels. The whiteness of the walls constrasts with the wood of the balustrade, doors and windows, as well as with the colourful decorating flower pots.
Flamenco Centre Fosforito was opened in June 2013 by the flamenco singer from the city after which it is named, thus providing the city with a much needed cultural and artistic equipment. The museum is not only about the figure of flamenco singer Fosforito, but it also values the flamenco from Córdoba and Andalusia as a way of life, a high quality artistic expression. Let’s visit it.
HALLS OF THE MUSEUM
HALL I: Flamenco throughout history: landmarks and figures– [PHOTO #1; #2]
First hall of the museum. We enter it on our right. Here, the visitor is introduced in the world of flamenco from a historical perspective, going through its possible origins and the most important characters and landmarks that have appeared in history. Everything is very interactive.
Artists like Antonio Chacón, La Niña de los Peines, Antonio Mairena, Carmen Amaya, Paco de Lucía… are immortalised on iron portraits.
HALL II: Elements of flamenco – [PHOTO #1; #2]
The following hall is located on the other side of the central courtyard. Once we have learned about the history and main figures of flamenco, it is time to see in depth its essential elements: singing, playing of instruments, and dancing, as well as percussion and the jaleos (cheering) as key pieces in the feeling and final nature of flamenco.
Three interactive tables allow us to play with a series of textual and multimedia elements in order to understand its relationships and behaviours.
HALL III: Keys of flamenco – [PHOTO #1; #2]
Would you like to be in touch with flamenco, to feel it? The formal richness of flamenco is very related to its rhythmic structures and apparent complexity of the relationships among guitar, voice and dancing. In this hall, the visitor makes direct contact with flamenco art… Do you feel like it?
HALL IV: Fosforito Hall– [PHOTO #1; #2]
Once we have learnt the history of flamenco and its main figures, and having been in touch with the art itself… it is time to know one of the greatest figures of flamenco in Córdoba, Antonio Fernández Díaz "Fosforito". It is a hall exhibiting his records, prizes, personal belongings… and the key to the city of Córdoba.

How to get there:
The Flamenco Centre Fosforito is located in one of the most symbolic places in the city, in Potro Square, which has existed since the 13th century, when the city was reconquested by Fernando III the Saint. The square can be easily accessed, as it is very close to Paseo de la Ribera, a street that accompanies River Guadalquivir on its way along Córdoba. If we arrive from the city centre, for example from Tendillas Square, we will just have to go through two streets, Claudio Marcelo and San Fernando.
