Palacio de Viana

In 1814, Diego Rafael Cabrera y Fernández de Mesa, seventh marquis of Villaseca and count of Villanueva de Cárdenas, came to an agreement with the counts of Torres Cabrera to incorporate some neighbouring fields to the palace, in exchange of a country house of his property. These fields were almost twice as big as the house, adding spaces such as the current courtyard of the Poolof the Wellof the Gardenersof the Chapelof the Gate and this one, the Garden.

The marquis had an affluent economic position and he thought he needed more space in the house. He justified his decision with these words: “for better comfort and living of his extended family, and since his houses lacked a garden, and the rest of necessary equipment and pieces…“.

With a square floor and Baroque design, the garden is the largest open space in Viana Palace, with more than 1,200 square metres. The layout follows the design of a transept, that is, it has two longitudinal axis forming a cross, where a fountain is located. This scheme is repeated in each of the four remaining squares, showing a total of sixteen squares of plantation, all of them surrounded by box hedges.

Inside each of the squares of the plantation we find species such as roses, palm trees o a centenary holm oak, which is even higher than the palatial buildings. Two of the faces of the wall, decorated with citrus plants, are closing walls; the remaining one connects to the palace, and is decorated with climbing roses that match its architecture. This architecture can be seen from the outside in the form of two floors in one area, and two floors and a mezzanine in another one, with balconies and windows facing the courtyard.

Just like the other courtyards explained, the archaeological remains abound, such as bases, columns, amphoras or jugs, which, together with the freshness and smells produced by its vegetation, make this space a perfect place for walking and enjoying the peace and quietness it provides us.
