1, Siete Revueltas Street (House of the Bells).
The Courtyard on 1, Siete Revueltas Street is, as in many other cases, an old neighbours’ house. It is known to have been a Mudejar palace in the 15th century, connected to the Convent of the Adoring Mothers through the “House of the Bells“, a metal foundry dedicated to making this kind of instruments, hence its popular name in Córdoba.
In the 1960s, the building was bought by the “Association of Friends of the Courtyards in Córdoba“, along with the courtyard on 44 (formerly 50), San Basilio Street, with the clear objective of avoiding the disappearance of this kind of unique buildings, according to Miguel Ángel Roldán, president of that association.
The House of the Bells has two courtyards connected between them through a beautiful entrance with an engrailed arch, typical of Mudejar art, as we mentioned at the beginning. The second courtyard, smaller than the first, can be accessed through a great wooden door, which is preceded by a large portico with an elevated round arch decorated with lobed arches and magnificent plasterwork, which remind us of our Islamic past. Over the entrance there are three windows covered by latticework decorated with geometric elements. This entrance is the only remain of the mentioned Mudejar palace.
From the first courtyard we can highlight its large size, or the parapet in the centre, decorated with several plants, depending on the season. As for the vegetable decoration, we can mention the cypresses. A great scene that suggests that many cultural events take place here, especially in May.
The second courtyard is more isolated and it fits more with the idea of the traditional courtyard from Córdoba. A narrow and steep stairway takes us to the second floor. The doors and windows are painted in blue, like the flower pots, which completely cover the walls, full of geraniums mainly, although we can also see other species such as begonias, fuchsias, yellow jasmines…
