We are already in the popular neighbourhood of San Lorenzo, and we head for Pastora Street, where Rafael, owner of the courtyard located on number 2, is waiting for us.
Rafael tells us that this was a typical neighbours’ house where up to ten families lived in the past. In 1979 a man bought the building with the intention of setting up a toaster and storehouse for nuts; “his idea was to build a house right there in the future“, adds. But this man seemed to change his idea and decided to sell the place to its current owner in 2000, who decided to redo it completely.
We get inside the space through a rectangular and big hallway. At the end there is the courtyard, which can be accessed through a round arch supported by plain-shafted columns with black capitals, all of them from Córdoba, according to the owners.
“We have three kinds of floor in each courtyard: clay, pebbles from Córdoba and marble tiles“, tells Rafael. The Arab well is very interesting, which was rescued during the redoing of the house, and where we can highlight the parapet from the 11th century.
The chapel is undoubtedly a unique space. The owners have tried to recreate the chapels of the magnificent courtyards from Córdoba, such as in Viana Palace. This one is dedicated to the “Virgin of Health“, as, before the redoing, the house had this image and they wanted to preserve it.
Three big trees are located in the centre of the Courtyard on Pastora Street: a laurel, an orange tree and an olive tree… which, according to Rafael, are the symbols of the Roman, Arab and Jewish culture, respectively. We must add the traditional geraniums, and the not so frequent bulbous plants, fleurs de lis or allium.
At the front of the complex there is a mosaic of the Virgin of Carmen, from San Cayetano, of which the whole family are loyal devoted.
