2, Tafures Street.

In most cases, courtyards become actual museums of their owners’ daily life; each step we take is a lived moment, a memory that will never be forgotten, because it is present, before our eyes. This is the case of Francisca Serrano, a woman who was born in Morocco but comes from the village of Carcabuey, this is the case of the Courtyard on 2, Tafures Street.

This is the courtyard we enter for the contest; there is a much bigger one inside, which is conceived to be used as a room of the house“, tells Francisca. The Courtyard on Tafures Street is actually small, but it expresses so much! There is no room from improvisation, everything is measured. It is wonderful.

We can highlight the floor with typical pebbles from Córdoba, or the white marble fountain, with a clear Mozarabic inspiration. Francisca tells: “I have wanted to give the courtyard the appearance this kind of spaces had in those old houses in Córdoba by putting straw blinds“. We can also see some gadges that are but memories of the slaughters our host used to carry out in her home village, Carcabuey, with her family: troughs, stoves, old baskets, pots, working boards…

An old bust catches our attention, which represents the former Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, Grace and Justice of the government during the kingdom of Monarch Alfonso XIII, Antonio Barroso y Castillo from Córdoba, which was made by famous sculptor, also from Córdoba, Mateo Inurria Lainosa.

Aware of the little light that this small courtyard receives every day, Francisca has decided to include many plants to provide with some shade. Therefore, there are calatheas, spider plants, calla lilies, azaleas, jasmines… even anthurium or espatifilium.

The Courtyard on Tafures Street has been awarded numerous prizes, and we can especially remember the ones in 2012 and 2013. We can highlight the secondary prize in 2002, the prize of good exploitation of elements in 1992, and the best natural light in 1999 and 2000.
