Rafael Córdoba, resident in the neighbourhood Alcázar Viejo will accompany us inside his wonderful Courtyard on 28, Postrera Street. He constantly mentions, with great nostalgia, his dear aunt Dori, the previous carer of the courtyard before him, and from whom he learnt most of what he knows today, which is a great deal.
Several archaeologists have dated the house in the 16th century. It was already in the 1970s when Rafael’s family acquired the building, and the whole family settled here: grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts, grandchildren… The courtyard was a place for meetings, celebrations and, in general, for the whole family to spend time together.
The Courtyard on 28, Postrera Street is very small, but not less valuable, quite the opposite. We enter through a dark hallway full of old tools. It still preserves the old wooden beams that covered the ceiling, a perfectly whitewashed washing sink, and the well, according to Rafael, half Roman and half Arab, but never dry.
In this courtyard we can see a wide variety of flowers, such as geraniums, calla lilies, daisies, lavender, roses or prawn flower… that grow in indigo pots. As for the colour of the pots, Rafael tells us that local writer Antonio Gala advised him once to change from green to indigo. When his aunt Dori died, he decided to obey him and painted them as we can see them today.
This courtyard has been awarded numerous prizes throughout the years. We can highlight the first prizes awarded in 1990 and 1997, or the second prizes awarded in 1992, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2012, among others. However, what aunt Dori really thanked was for the visitors to appreciate the courtyard more than any economic award or prize.
