We finish our tour around this area in a very special and known courtyard in Córdoba, since it is the headquarters of the Association of Frienship with Saharan Children in Córdoba; it is the Courtyard on 3, Escañuela Street. It is an association dedicated to organizing humanitary campaigns, with the aim of improving the quality of life of those affected by a conflict that has been going on for several decades. It is a very active organization, famous in Córdoba for bringing numerous children from Saharan settlements to spend the summer in our city.
We are received by Arturo Falcón, president of the association, and Mariana Grande, one of the volunteers who look after the courtyard for the whole year. “It is the second biggest one among those entering the contest“, adds Mariana.
We get to the courtyard through an entrance corridor, with the shape of an “L”. The clay-tiled floor and its doors and windows are dark green, which contrast with the whiteness of the walls, but at the same time, match the colour of the plants. Besides, all the flower pots are painted in red, which also contrast with the surroundings and add a cheerful and colourful touch to the place. These pots cover all the walls, whose plants and flowers provide them with a unique charm. We can highlight the following: geraniums, jasmines, carnations, roses, mint, spider plants and asparagus plants, among others.
We are attracted by a modern fountain attached to one of the walls, made in brick, stone and tiles, forming a beautiful design inside it. Over it we can see a beautiful tile of the “Virgin of Anguish“, covered by a small roof and flanked by two small lanterns, which can also be seen in the rest of the courtyard, providing the place with a nice and warm light at night.
We can also highlight some fruit trees, such as lemon and orange trees, in some of its corners. At the end of the courtyard we can see a stage, as there are some performances at the Festival of the May Crosses and other times of the year, with the aim of raising funds for the cause. This stage is decorated with an old parapet of a well, many flower pots hanging on its walls and a beautiful fountain in the corner, with plenty of light and completely surrounded by plants.
There have been many prizes awarded to this courtyard in the last years, such as the third prize in 2010, the famous prize awarded for the neighbours’ effort in 1990 or the four honorable mentions in 1986, 2001, 2005 and 2012.
