A couple of streets in the south take us to Maribel Navajas’s house and her wonderful Courtyard on 5, Parras Street. It is a neighbours’ house where up to six families lived before Maribel bought it with her husband, Pedro Montes, at the beginning of the 1980s.
Maribel and her family like old things, and that is why they decided to place on the walls a beautiful tile decorated with Arab geometric motifs. The floor, as it could not be otherwise, is mostly covered by the famous pebbles from Córdoba, but in this case in alternation with clay tiles”… because it keeps really well the freshness after watering the plants in the evening“, adds.
This taste for the old can be seen again in the numerous motifs decorating the courtyard, such as a sewing machine from 1914, ora typewriter from the beginning of the 20th century, old sinks, washstands… “Most of them are presents from our friends, who think they might look nice in our courtyard and they give them to us…”.
But the most interesting thing in the Courtyard on 5, Parras Street is its vegetable and flowery composition. Maribel proudly mentions a huge Adam’s rib (salad plant) that is about thirty years old, or the Chinese geraniums, her favourite flowers. “All the flowers drink from rainwater” tells us Maribel, as they have come up with a rainwater storage system through canals arranged on the roof of the house. They have even built a sort of greenhouse around these canals, aiming at spoiling the most fragile plants, which do not need too much sun throughout the year in the courtyard.
Maribel and her family have been awarded numerous prizes along the years, but they can especially remember the three first prizes in 2003, 2007 and 2010, or the second ones in 2004, 2008 and 2009.
