We start the second itinerary, which goes around the neighbourhoods of San Pedro and Santiago, on Maese Luis Street, very close to Corredera Square, a very old traditional and bohemian area, full of alive history in Córdoba. Maese Luis Street can be easily accessed from Diario Córdoba Street, or de la Feria, as it is popularly known in our city.
Isabel López, the owner since 1985, is waiting for us at the door. She tells us that they could do little to save the old house due to its bad condition, and therefore they had to rebuild it completely, although they could save the old bars… And they are not for sale!
Isabel says that the house is sculpted in marble, which is the main material. We can highlight the stairway leading to the first floor, the washing room, the country kitchen annexed to the courtyard, the living room next to the hallway, and, above all, the courtyard, where there is a mixture of tiles and the typical pebbles from Córdoba.
In the middle of the courtyard we can see, as it could not be otherwise, the Arcángel San Rafael, guardian angel of Córdoba, depicted on tiles with white background. Under the archangel there is a water fountain Isabel uses to water her plants. The water falls from the fountain into a small ditch, which takes it to the octagonal bricked fountain in the centre of the courtyard.
There is plenty of vegetation. Apart from the great number of pots, they are also huge. We can see all kinds of species: ferns, aspidistras, geraniums, begonias, spider plants, roses, hydrangeas… Isabel recognizes that she has so many different species of flowers that she does not know the names of most of them, “I only care for them“.
Isabel’s courtyard has received many awards along the years, especially dedicated to the good use of water and the variety of flowers. It has also been awarded some secondary prizes in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999; and an honorable mention in 2001.
