Penitential Brotherhood of Nazarenes of the Holy Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Our Father Jesus on his encounter with the Saint Woman Veronica and Our Mother and Lady Saint Mary of Trinity and Saint Martha.
HISTORY.
It was founded in 1982 in the parish of San Juan y Todos los Santos (Trinidad)by a group of young members. Its first station of penance took place on Holy Tuesday 1986. In 1987 a reform period started in the brotherhood which gave it its current configuration. The blessing of the current image of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Our Father Jesus Nazarene) was held in 1988 and the image of Nuestra Madre y Señora María Santísima de la Trinidad (Our Mother and Lady Saint Mary of Trinity) was blessed the following year and it was included in the penitential retinue on Holy Tuesday 1995.
TEMPLE.
Parish of San Juan y Todos los Santos (Trinidad). It was founded by King Fernando III over an old mosque; the one we can see today dates back to 1710. Although we do not have evidence of its author, it is thought to have been master Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo. The church has a single nave, with a small transept and a rectangular apse, as well as the two façades from the 18th century with Solomon columns. It has a prominent group of altarpieces from the 18th century, among which we can highlight the one at the front of the main altar. It also has some mural paintings by Antonio Palomino representing motifs from the Old Testament.
THE IMAGES.
Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (Our Father Jesus Nazarene) – [PHOTO #1; #2]
The image of the Lord was made by religious sculptor from Seville Antonio Dubé de Luque around 1988. This image substitutes the previous anonymous nazarene from the 18th century. The scene represented is the encounter between Jesus and the Saint Women on his way to Mount Calvary.
It is a sculpture to be dressed and he is represented with the Cross on his left shoulder, slightly leaning forward, while raising his right hand towards Saint Veronica. He has very marked features, swarthy face, without crown of thorns but the marks left by it can be seen, as there is blood falling down his forehead. He is looking down and frowning his eyebrows as a sign of the pain and tiredness he is feeling.
Saint Veronica iskneeling and holding the veil with the Holy Face, while looking at Christ in tears. It is a work by Antonio Salto from 1988. The Saint Women were also made by Salto in 1989.
Nuestra Madre y Señora María Santísima de la Trinidad (Our Mother and Lady Saint Mary of Trinity) – [PHOTO #1; #2]
The image of Nuestra Madre y Señora María Santísima de la Trinidad(Our Mother and Lady Saint Mary of Trinity) was made by sculptor from Seville Antonio Salto Román. She is slightly turning her head left, with a low look and six tears coming down her eyes. In my opinion, she is showing a gesture of contained pain which gives her a praise worthy elegance and exquisiteness.
