The Courtyard of the Chapel, like the three former ones (Pool, Well and Gardeners), belonged to the houses of the marquises of Torres Cabrera, but this one was the main courtyard, hence the difference in style between this and the rest.
The courtyard, built in the 17th century, has two of its four arcade galleries with round arches and exposed brick, over plain-shafted columns with Tuscan capital. In one of the two arcades, there was the chapel of Viana Palace, after which the courtyard is named. The gallery is covered by a simple wooden ceiling and it is paved with flat brick typical from Córdoba.
As for the chapel annexed to the courtyard, recently recovered, we can highlight three valuable paintings, which belong to Cajasur’s collection: “Saint Raphael” and “Saint Michael“, by Juan de Valdés Leal, and an “Allegory of the defence of the Immaculate Conception by the Franciscans“, attributed to the circle of the painter from Córdoba Antonio del Castillo.
Everything is richly decorated with archaeological remains, which clearly show the economic and social power of the family. We should highlight over the rest two Roman mosaics decorating the walls; one of them, very restored, represents a scallop shell; whereas the other one is not made with tesseras, as it is usual, but with geommetrical and regular figures of pink marble, hence their peculiarity.
The second floor is barely visible due to the amount of vegetation, and that is why one must glimpse the windows painted in the same blue we mentioned in the previous courtyard.
Eight centenary orange trees decorate the Courtyard of the Chapel, while they provide it with shade. In the centre there is a fountain with an octagonal base and different water dispensers; it is covered by a great amount of fern. Ivy covers most of one of the walls which does not have an arcade, whereas in the other one there is a series of glass windows facing the Saavedras’s Hall, which cannot be visited today.
