Palacio de Viana

The Courtyard of the Gate is named after the big iron gate closing its only wall which faces the outside. It is the only courtyard, as well as the Courtyard of the Bars, that can be seen from the outside.

It belonged to the houses of the marquises of Torres Cabrera; in fact, it was their reception courtyard, entering the complex. This function has been recently recovered, since nowadays the inside of Viana Palace can be accessed through its fantastic gate.

The space is rectangular, with two arcade galleries, more specifically the ones on the longer sides. On the outside, the arcades have round arches on the ground floor; on the first floor they keep the same layout, but the round arches are substituted by lintelled openings, crowned by parted triangular pediments. The difference is that one of the arcades is supported by chamfered pillars, whereas in the other one they are supported by bricked pilasters which are part of the wall.

The ground of the Courtyard of the Gate is made of small stones typical from Córdoba, arranged in black and white squares, and in the centre there is a finely traced fountain, which was originally a baptistery.

The faces of the wall are covered by climbing plants, bougainvilleas and miniature roses. Over the pillars of the façade, there is ivy and, in flower beds, geraniums, calla lilies and rubber plants. A beautiful yew grows next to one of the pillars. The plant is very ornamental due to its pyramidal shape.

Like in other courtyards we find archaeological remains, such as a sculpture of “Saint Anthony the Great“, dated in the year 1678. In an alcove, between shafts of Roman columns, he seems to watch those who walk around the courtyard. Stylish wooden benches constitute an ideal place to meditate and rest.
