Once we leave Goya’s Hall, we walk along the Gallery of Goya’s Hall towards the Hall of Gobelins.
This room gets its name from the manufacture of Gobelins, founded under the mandate of Louis XIV and located in the Parisian suburb of Saint Michelle, a factory where each and every tapestry displayed here was made.
All the tapestries are part of an original series consisting of eight copies and it is believed to date back to the 18th century. The series is called “The New Indies“, and it represents the paintings by Albert Eckhout, given as a present to the French Crown in 1678 by Prince of Orange Mauricio de Nassau. The tapestries displayed here are “The fruit collectors”, “The Indian hunter“, “Animal fight” and “Transport and grinding of sugar cane“. The themes represented are human, animal and vegetable allegories of the New World, under a Romantic prism and, maybe, not quite real; everything is surrounded by a leafy and elated nature, where outside light plays an important role.
The tapestries were brought from Madrid by Sofía Amelia de Lancaster y Bleck, third and last Marchioness of Viana; they belonged to the Dancing Hall, where we think they were displayed in all their splendor. In order to keep such big compositions, the marchioness decided to reform this hall, which at the time was part of the administrator’s house, thus making it higher. In spite of that, the Hall of the Gobelings is a bit small, since, due to the size of its tapestries, the lack of perspective makes it difficult to contemplate them in appropriate conditions. For this reason, they cannot be enjoyed as such quality work deserve.
Below the mentioned tapestries we can see up to four benches and eight stools of similar characteristics, also brought from the Dancing Hall in Madrid, with Neobaroque shapes and upholstered with light beige fabrics. A beautiful oriental carpet on the floor completes the decoration.
