We continue our tour around the “lived house” in one the most interesting rooms in Viana Palace, the so-called Hall of the Senses.
This small but very interesting neoclassical room is named after the five mural paintings, with a clear Goyesque inspiration, decorating its walls and representing the five human senses. Represented from right to left, they are: hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell.
A sumptuous carpet made in the Royal Tapestry Factory covers almost the whole surface of the room, whose centre is occupied by a small round board table with an oil lamp made in blue milk glass. Over it, hanging from the vaulted ceiling, there is a fine baccarat lamp in bronze and glass, which is undoubtedly one of the best ones in the house. On the right of the door, we can see a French fireplace with a mirror and shelf, on which there is a clock and two Sèvres candelabra.
The most original and remarkable thing in the Hall of the Senses is undoubtedly its Filipino furniture. It consists of twenty two papier-maché Napoleon III-style pieces, lacquered in black and decorated with sea inlays and golden frames, providing a clear exotic character. It is also important to mention the set of Romantic sofa and armchairs upholstered with capitoné technique, a variety of padding attaching this with buttons sewn from the outside. The armchairs, in an elegant blue colour, are located around the fireplace and the sofa is placed on the opposite corner.
Other interesting pieces are the four English ceramic dogs from the end of the 19th century, displayed at the end of the room, next to a 18th-century folding screen decorated with paintings of mythological scenes, or the Oriental fans, etc.
Despite having numerous objects, the whole room does not transmit a feeling of saturation, due to the excellent display of all of them, according to the marchioness’s taste.
