Hall of Porcelain
This hall takes its name after a great part of the spectacular porcelain dinner service, belonging to the Compañía de las Indias (Company of the Indians), and hand-decorated, which was donated by King Alfonso XIII to his close friend José Saavedra y Salamanca, second marquis of Viana.
A total of a hundred and one pieces form this impressive collection, kept in the Hall of Porcelain; the biggest and most valuable one are inside a beautiful 18th-century cupboard, green polychrome with golden overlays everywhere. It is of special interest the golden trims around the glass doors, where the combination of concave and convex lines provide the ensemble with a great plasticity, or the golden fruit and vegetable elements crowning the cupboard. The rest of the dinner service is distributed in different glass cabinets built in the walls of the hall. ... [Read more...]
Among the different pieces of furniture of the hall we can highlight a sofa and four Louis XIII-style armchairs, as well as two golden Solomon Baroque columns decorated with grapes, previously located in the Hall-Dining Room of the Madrileños (which cannot be visited). The large and comfortable sofa is made of walnut, it is square, with fine green upholstery, matching the rest of the hall. The characteristics of the armchairs are typical of their style, such as wide back, curve arms or toned legs connected by mouldings, as well as being upholstered with fine green silk.
Between the Solomon columns we can see, attached to the wall, a carpet hanging like a tapestry, by the French manufacture of Aubusson, and decorated with floral and geommetric elements, where green and pink prevail.
The furniture of the Hall of Porcelain is completed with large Chinese porcelain earthenware jars, porcelain pots, Louis XVI-style stools, small ornamental mirrors, Spanish Baroque tables with richly decorated legs… On the floor we can see another Persian carpet, with a similar theme and quality to the one we saw in the Hall of the Signatures.
