C/ Escañuela, 3.

We conclude our tour of this area in a very special and well-known patio in Córdoba, as it is the headquarters of the Cordoban Association of Friendship with Sahrawi Children. This is the Patio at 3 Escañuela Street. It is an association dedicated to organizing humanitarian aid campaigns, with the aim of improving the quality of life of those affected by a conflict that has lasted for several decades. They are a very active organization, well known in Córdoba for bringing numerous children from the Sahrawi settlements to our city to spend the summer.

We are welcomed by Arturo Falcón, president of the association, and Mariana Grande, one of the volunteers who take care of the patio throughout the year. “It is the second largest of those entered in the competition,” adds Mariana.

Description of the patio

We enter the patio through an entrance corridor, which is L-shaped. The floor is made of clay tiles and its doors and windows are dark green, contrasting with the white walls while at the same time harmonizing with the color of the plants. In addition, all the flowerpots are painted red, which also contrasts with their surroundings and gives the place a touch of joy and color. These pots cover all the walls, whose plants and flowers give it a particular charm, with the following standing out: gitanillas, jasmine, geraniums, carnations, roses, mints, spider plants, and asparagus ferns, among others.

A modern fountain attached to one of the walls draws attention. It is made of bricks, stone, and tiles, which form a beautiful pattern inside. Above it we find a lovely tile of the Virgin of the Anguish, covered by a small roof and flanked by two lanterns, which can also be seen throughout the rest of the patio, providing the patio with a pleasant warm light at night.

Cultural and charitable uses

We can also highlight some fruit trees, such as lemon and orange trees, in some of its corners. At the back of the patio we find a stage, as during the Cruces de Mayo festival and at certain times of the year there are performances, with the aim of raising funds for the cause. This stage is decorated with an old well curb, many pots hanging from its walls, and a beautiful corner fountain, very well lit and completely surrounded by plants.

Awards and recognitions

This patio has received numerous awards in recent years, such as the third prize in 2010, the well-known award granted for neighborhood effort in 1990, or the four honorable mentions: 1986, 2001, 2005, and 2012.
