The Piety

Claretian Brotherhood and Fraternity of the Most Holy Christ of Piety and Holy Mary of Sweet Life and Our Hope.

History

The brotherhood was founded in 1972 within the Parish of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, with the aim of providing religious formation to the neighborhood residents and supporting the parish in its efforts to uplift a community with many social needs.

In its early years, only the image of the Most Holy Christ of Piety was carried in a Stations of the Cross procession. The devotion inspired by the titular images among the neighbors during the procession, held for many years on Good Friday, led the Claretian community and the brotherhood to seek an image of the Blessed Virgin.

Thus, in 1983 they contacted Claretians in Seville, who donated an image that was housed in the chapel-home on Doña Guiomar Street. The statue was named Our Lady of Hope and was incorporated into the Christ’s float, which is wheeled and, during that decade, reached Costa Sol, the square through which the brotherhood processes in its new route towards the Official Procession since 2012.

The Titular Images

Most Holy Christ of Piety

The image of the Most Holy Christ of Piety is an anonymous work acquired in Seville in 1972. Its origin and approximate date of creation are unknown.

It is a life-sized crucifix, nailed to the cross with three nails. A notable feature is the interesting shroud knotted on its right side. His head, tilted to the right, bears the three typical rays of Christian representations.

Holy Mary of Sweet Life and Our Hope

The Marian titular of the Brotherhood of Piety is an anonymous 19th-century image. It was donated in 1983 by the Claretians of Seville. Before being acquired by the brotherhood, it was known under the invocation of Virgin of Hope.

It is a “candelero” type image, made of carved and polychromed wood. Interestingly, she lifts her gaze to the heavens, which suited the composition of the fraternity’s mystery well, as her gaze seems to connect with that of the crucified Lord.

With a simple, sweet, and sincere face, she inspires devotion and admiration among the residents of the popular Las Palmeras neighborhood.
