The Triumphal Entry (The Little Donkey)
Brotherhood and Confraternity of Our Father Jesus of the Kings in His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Most Holy Mary of Victory and Our Lady of the Palm.
History
The Borriquita Brotherhood was founded in 1944 in the Church of La Trinidad, carrying out its first penitential procession on Palm Sunday of 1945. It was dissolved in 1957 and refounded around 1963 in the Church of María Auxiliadora with the support of Monsignor Fernández Conde, returning to procession in 1965 organized by the Brotherhood of the Prendimiento, entering a period of great growth.
In 1977, it moved to the Parish of San Lorenzo, integrating into the Brotherhood of the Remedio de Ánimas until, in 1982, it became fully independent and established its own governing board.
Temple
The canonical seat is the Royal Parish of San Lorenzo Mártir, one of the fourteen temples erected by Saint Ferdinand in Córdoba after the Reconquest of 1236. Dedicated since its origins to Saint Lawrence Martyr, it is currently the church that hosts the largest number of brotherhoods, becoming the core of the brotherhood district between the gardens of Alpargate and Realejo.
The Images
Our Father Jesus of the Kings
The image of Our Father Jesus of the Kings was created by the Cordoban sculptor Juan Martínez Cerrillo around 1963. However, it is not the first work the artist made for the Borriquita Brotherhood, as in 1945 he executed an earlier statue that was discarded due to its small size.
The figure of the Lord stands out for its detailed anatomy, with a head of wavy hair and a full beard framing a face of sorrowful expression and introspective gaze, with a slightly open mouth, conveying the awareness of the fate that awaits Him. He gently raises His right hand while holding the reins of the animal with His left.
In 1992, the brotherhood commissioned Cordoban sculptor Miguel Ángel González Jurado to remodel the image to adapt it for annual worship. The interventions included replacing the feet and hands, turning it into an articulated mannequin that allows it to be displayed both riding the donkey and enthroned.
Our Lady of the Palm
The image of Our Lady of the Palm is the work of sculptor Francisco Romero Zafra, completed in 1991. It was initially conceived to replace the head of the Virgin of Rocío and Tears, but Fray Ricardo of Córdoba, captivated by its beauty, proposed its acquisition to the brotherhood with the intention of having it procession on Palm Sunday.
It is a vestment image, with a youthful face and sorrowful expression, marked by delicate tears. She presents a serene beauty, furrowed brow, and downcast gaze, with long, slender fingers.
Nazarene Habit
The Nazarene habit consists of a bone-colored tunic, Hebrew turban, and red sash in the section of the Lord. In the Virgin’s section, the Nazarenes wear a tunic, face covering, and cape in bone color, with red buttons and cincture.
