Festival of the Patios of Córdoba, World Heritage.

The Festival of the Patios of Córdoba is one of the most representative and popular celebrations of our city and, without a doubt, we can affirm that it is the best-known outside of it, as every year many people from other cities, and even from abroad, come to discover our patios.

The Patios of Córdoba is one of the most representative and popular celebrations of our city

The Patios of Córdoba contest begins immediately after the end of Las Cruces de Mayo, and for two weeks the patios are open for anyone who wishes to visit them. Of the two weeks the event lasts, the first is dedicated to the contest, while the second week is when the awards ceremony takes place. However, the patios remain open for visits, especially those that have won awards that year, which usually attract more attention after the jury’s decision. In addition, nearby festivities are usually held so that visitors can enjoy a good time with local wine and music while they tour the patios.

Categories of the Patios of Córdoba Contest

The Patios of Córdoba contest is organized into two categories. On the one hand, there is the “Old Architecture” category, which includes those patios that have undergone few renovations and retain their original appearance, and in which three main prizes and six honorable mentions are awarded. The second category is called “Modern or Renovated Architecture”, which includes patios that have undergone changes in structure or decoration, or simply those that are newly built but follow the traditional style; these also receive two main prizes and five honorable mentions. In addition to these categories, there are a number of patios that are not part of the competition but are still open to the public.

On the other hand, a parallel contest is organized called Rejas y Balcones (Grilles and Balconies), which takes place at the same time as the Patios of Córdoba contest and consists of decorating the grilles and balconies of houses with natural and floral elements. This contest awards a total of three main prizes and three honorable mentions.

UNESCO Recognition

The Patios of Córdoba were recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in December 2012.
