Marquis’s Bedroom

We conclude our tour of this western sector of the Viana Palace with the Marquis’s Bedroom, also known as the Admiral’s Bedroom, located right in the gallery, above the Main or Reception Courtyard.

The Antechamber

The Marquis’s Bedroom consists of two clearly distinct rooms. The first is a kind of small antechamber, a simple and austere study that, due to its decoration, some have seen as a nostalgic evocation of a ship’s cabin. It is important to remember that the third Marquis of Viana, Don Fausto Saavedra y Collado, the last resident of this house, was an Admiral in the Spanish Navy. A small Gothic-Isabelline style table, five marine-themed lithographs, a bookcase-cabinet with a lower section resembling a trunk, a 19th-century Romantic chair, and an Empire-style armchair are its most notable elements.

The Bedroom

The next room is the Marquis’s Bedroom itself, where we can see up to ten lithographs adorning the walls, similar to those in the antechamber. It features a Carlos IV-style bed made of mahogany and decorated with marquetry, a nightstand, and an Empire-style chest of drawers with marquetry. The bed, characterized by its fine and elegant lines, has stipe-style legs that extend vertically and end in pinecone motifs.

On the left wall of the room, we find two chairs with similar decoration and style to the one in the antechamber, which, as noted, is of the Romantic type, all three dated to the 19th century. Simple and elegant, the chairs have slightly curved legs and backrests joined in three sections, each featuring different decorations, such as embossed initials or marquetry or inlay work.

Notable Works and Elements

Finally, worth highlighting is an anonymous panel depicting The Adoration of the Magi, and the rug made at the Royal Factory of Santa Bárbara, whose geometric patterns in red and yellowish tones clearly harmonize with the furniture and the rest of the room’s decoration.
