Painting Rooms
For space reasons, we have decided to merge two small-format rooms into a single category: the Brueghel Room and the Duke of Rivas Room, along with the adjoining corridor.
We return to the Goya Hall Gallery, accessing the aforementioned corridor, which houses significant works such as an oil on panel by the Madrid-born painter Eugenio de Lucas depicting “Mary Magdalene“, a “Arrest of Jesus” by the renowned Cordoban painter Antonio del Castillo, or an exceptional “Ecce Homo” by Luis de Morales, nicknamed “El Divino“, who became none other than court painter to King Philip II.
Brueghel Room
To the left, a door opens leading to the Brueghel Room, which houses works belonging to the school of this exceptional Flemish painter. There are a total of six oil paintings on copper, representing “Animals on the Way to the Ark“, “Allegory of War“, and a series of four paintings titled “Allegory of the Senses“, missing the sense of touch. All are characterized by their warm coloring, typical of the Flemish school, as well as a taste for meticulous detail. An Italian cabinet with ivory, stools, and a carpet complete the furnishings. It is worth noting that the window of this room offers one of the most beautiful views of the palace gardens.
Duke of Rivas Room
The Brueghel Room serves as a corridor leading to the well-known Duke of Rivas Room. Up to ten canvases hang on its walls, three of them signed by Ángel de Saavedra himself, the Duke of Rivas, including a “Self-portrait” signed in Gibraltar in 1824, a “Still Life” signed in Orléans in 1830, and “Penitent Magdalene” signed in Naples in 1846. Also noteworthy are “Cell of Philip II in El Escorial” and “Duke of Rivas’s Office in Naples“, by the Count of Donadío and Giuseppe Russo, respectively. This small room features a beautiful glass ceiling lamp from La Granja de San Ildefonso.
