The Star
Sacramental Brotherhood of the Sweet Name of Jesus and Confraternity of Nazarenes of the Most Holy Ecce Homo, Our Father Jesus of the Redemption before Caiaphas, Denials and Tears of Saint Peter, and Our Lady of the Star.
History
Founded in 1983 in the Parish of San Juan and Todos los Santos (Trinidad). Since April 1982, it began venerating two ancient images owned by the parish: Most Holy Ecce Homo and Our Lady of the Remedies. After a few difficult early years, in the mid-1980s, new brothers revitalized the confraternity including a change of titular images, becoming: Sweet Name of Jesus, Our Father Jesus of the Redemption, and Our Lady of the Star, along with the founding titular, the Most Holy Ecce Homo. In 1987, the brotherhood moved to the Parish of San Fernando and began its expansion and strengthening. It made its first penitential procession on Holy Monday in 1996 and, since 2009, the Marian titular also processes under a canopy.
Church
Parish of San Fernando. A church dedicated to the monarch who reconquered the city after Muslim rule. Located in the heart of the Huerta de la Reina neighborhood, the area lives around its modern parish.
The Titular Images
Our Father Jesus of the Redemption
The artist chosen by this young confraternity to sculpt the image of the Lord was Miguel Ángel González Jurado from Córdoba, who completed the carving in 1992. Although it is a vestment image, it is entirely carved in cedar wood. The Lord is depicted standing, bound, with his torso slightly leaning forward, and his head turned slightly to the right. His face shows no signs of martyrdom, with a downcast, pensive, submissive gaze. He wears a plain purple tunic, adorned with a gold cord donated by the Brotherhood of the Expiration. The scene, led by the image of Our Father Jesus of the Redemption, is completed by six other figures, all sculpted by Miguel Ángel González Jurado. The scene represents the moment when Jesus appears before the High Priest Caiaphas, who is enthroned, thoughtful, listening to the accusations made by two members of the Sanhedrin. One Roman soldier stands before him with his helmet under his arm, while the other seems to be conversing with the Lord, gesturing with his arms. The final figure is that of a Black slave fanning Caiaphas. Altogether, it is a well-structured composition.
Our Lady of the Star
A work by the Sevillian sculptor Juan Ventura, made in 1986. It is a candelero image, meant to be dressed, very expressive. Her face shows deep sorrow, reflected in the many tears streaming from her half-open eyes. Her gaze is lowered, afflicted, with slightly curved eyebrows, and she possesses that characteristic triangle between the brows found in Sevillian sorrowful images of the time, reminiscent of works such as the Virgin of Mercy by Buiza or the Good End by Hernández León. Her pale face and parted fleshy lips make this sorrowful image one of the most awaited and beloved of our Holy Week.
