C/ Parras, 6.

They say in Córdoba that the Patio at Calle Parras, 6 breathes poetry. It’s no coincidence that the famous cordobés poet Pablo García Baena was born here, as confirmed by a plaque hanging on the façade.

The year the house was built is very difficult to determine; the only existing documentation corresponds to a book of donations, written in Old Spanish, from which, by translating some dates, it can be deduced that its construction might date back to around 1530. It is known that this house, along with the adjacent ones, formed a single property, used first as a barracks, then as a hospital, later as a convent, and we believe that due to confiscations, it eventually became a residential property.

Life in the patio

Rosario told us that life in this patio has changed a lot over the years: “in those days when about seven families lived here, we were happy despite the hardships, because we were content with little“. “Also, we cared about each other so much that if someone took a while to come out of their room, we’d already be calling to see if something had happened. I can’t complain now either, because I’m lucky that the neighbors on Calle Parras are all one big family“.

Architecture and unique features

From an architectural point of view, the Patio at Calle Parras, 6 has changed little; in fact, when Pablo García Baena visits—who left it at just 7 years old—”he says it looks just as he remembers from his childhood, the only things I’ve removed are the washing sinks and the communal bathroom“. One of the house’s gems is, without a doubt, the old well, “no one has been able to tell me exactly what period it’s from, but I know it’s half Roman and half Arab“.

Vegetation in the patio

As for the vegetation, a magnificent hydrangea stands out, “no one else in Córdoba has a hydrangea like this one, it’s planted in the ground and blooms a lot“, she tells us enthusiastically, just as she is about the four-meter-tall asparagus plant, which received the award for the most unique plant in 2010. And as in other cases, the patio features a fruit tree, a tradition brought from Arab lands—this time a lemon tree, “it gives a special tangy flavor to the cocktails“, she says with a smile.

Recognition

Rosario and her patio have received numerous awards over the years, but one stands out in particular: the “Gitanilla de Oro” awarded by the association of caretakers of patios, grilles, and balconies “Claveles y Gitanillas”.
