Peace and Hope
Pontifical, Venerable, and Illustrious Franciscan Brotherhood of Nazarenes and Confraternity of Our Father Jesus of Humility and Patience and Our Lady of Peace and Hope.
History
Founded in the Convent of the Holy Angel of the Capuchin Fathers of Córdoba in 1940 by veterans of the Spanish Civil War, making its first procession on Palm Sunday of 1941 with the Virgin of Peace, a beloved work by its author, who was accompanied under a canopy by St. John until 1960. In 1945, the Lord of Humility and Patience was added to the procession, becoming from that moment one of the most spectacular pasos of our Holy Week, incorporating significant innovations.
Temple
Convent of the Holy Angel (Capuchin Fathers). Built in the 17th century, it rises in the deeply Cordoban Plaza de Capuchinos with a decorative austerity complemented by the sober Baroque style of the interior. The main altar stands out, with paintings in the Sevillian aesthetic by Acisclo Leal Gaete, following Franciscan iconographic models. The image of the Virgin presides over a decorated niche using the Cordoban technique of guadamecí, made by Juan Martínez Cerrillo, the author of the Image itself.
The Titular Images
Our Father Jesus of Humility and Patience
In the now-lost Hermitage of St. John Lateran there was an image of Christ under the invocation of Humility and Patience, depicted seated on a stone in a prayerful attitude, like many other images of the same devotion. As it was impossible to acquire ownership of the image, which was the initial plan, in 1942 the Brotherhood commissioned the Cordoban sculptor Juan Martínez Cerrillo to create the image of Our Father Jesus of Humility and Patience.
The Christ of the Hermitage of St. John Lateran represented the moment when Jesus, seated, prayed to the Father for those about to execute him, while awaiting the moment of Crucifixion. However, Cerrillo chose to depict Him standing, with the tunic half-fallen, alluding more to the stripping.
The image of the Lord appears standing, with His right arm forward and the left slightly back, as if in the act of removing His garments. He turns His head slightly to the right, gazing downward with reddened eyes, the result of fatigue and restrained pain. With dark complexion, He has a simply carved beard and a crown of thorns with up to four branches that cause a constant flow of blood down His neck and face. He wears a fine tissue tunic embroidered with gold thread.
The rest of the images comprising the mystery are works by sculptor Antonio Bernal Redondo, completed around 1997. Leading the procession is the image of the Lord; behind Him, a Sanhedrin offers Him wine mixed with gall, while a Roman attempts to strip Him of His garments. In the background, semi-nude, are the two thieves to be crucified alongside Jesus, and behind them, a mounted Roman commands an executioner to raise the Cross to begin the Crucifixion.
Our Lady of Peace and Hope
Our Lady of Peace and Hope was the first sorrowful Virgin that Juan Martínez Cerrillo created for our city, around 1939. It is a candelero-style image, with carved hands and face. Her face is of a very personal style, far from traditional canons. Within a restrained dramatism, she shows great tenderness and beauty. With pale complexion and delicate features, large eyes and a downward gaze, she slightly furrows her brow in an expression of sorrow for her Son, who is near death on the Cross.

Unlike other representations, the image of Our Father Jesus of Humility and Patience was sculpted by Juan Martínez Cerrillo standing, in the act of shedding his garments, alluding to the moment of the stripping, instead of the traditional seated posture in prayer.
