C/ Maese Luis, 9.

We begin the second itinerary, which covers the neighborhoods of San Pedro and Santiago, on Calle Maese Luis, very close to Plaza de la Corredera, a traditional and bohemian area, full of living history of Córdoba. The aforementioned Calle Maese Luis is easily accessible from Calle Diario Córdoba, or de la Feria, as it is popularly known in our city.

Isabel López, the owner since 1985, awaits us at the door. She tells us that little could be done for the old house, as its poor condition meant it had to be completely rebuilt. However, the old grilles were able to be saved… and they are not for sale!

The house and its architecture

The house is sculpted in marble, says Isabel—it’s the main material. Notable features include the staircase leading to the first floor, the laundry room, the country-style kitchen annexed to the patio, the living room next to the entrance hall, and above all, the patio, which combines flagstone with the characteristic Cordoban pebble mosaic flooring of this region.

The patio and the water

Presiding over the patio is, of course, Archangel Saint Raphael, guardian of Córdoba, depicted on white-background tile. Beneath the archangel, water flows from a spout that Isabel uses to water all her plants. The water falls from the spout into a small channel, which carries it to the octagonal brick fountain located in the center of the patio.

Vegetation in the patio

The vegetation is very abundant. In addition to the large number of pots, there are some enormous planters. You can find all kinds of plant species: ferns, aspidistras, gypsy carnations, geraniums, begonias, spider plants, roses, hydrangeas… Isabel confides in us that she has so many different floral species that she doesn’t even know the names of most of them, “I just focus on taking care of them.”

Awards and recognition

Isabel’s patio has received numerous awards over the years, especially for the excellent use of water and the floral variety. It has also received several runner-up prizes: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1999; and an honorable mention in 2001.
