Solitude
Franciscan Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament and Nazarene Confraternity of the Holy Cross on Mount Calvary and Our Lady of Solitude.
History
Founded in the central Parish of San Miguel back in 1975, and a year later moved to Santiago. It carried out its first processional outing in 1978; but, after the parish burned down in 1979, it relocated to the Convent of Santa Cruz, and for a few years to San Pedro, then, after the closure of the latter, returned to Santa Cruz until the year 1991.
Temple
Parish of Santiago the Apostle. One of the 14 royal foundations of Ferdinand III upon reconquering Córdoba in 1236. Over time, and due to the severe fire it suffered at the end of the 20th century, the current church regained part of the medieval appearance of the temple that the saintly king had ordered to be built in dedication to Santiago the Apostle, with its characteristic cross appearing on the parish shield since ancient times. It has one of the most beautiful portals and bell towers of the period, though hidden by the network of streets surrounding the temple. The Virgin of Solitude can be admired in the intimacy of the Chapel of the Tabernacle.
The Images
Our Lady of Solitude
The image of Our Lady of Solitude is the work of Seville sculptor Luis Álvarez Duarte, made in 1975. It is a candelero-style image, which suffered slight damage caused by the fire that affected the Church of Santiago in 1979. Duarte himself restored the statue, giving it a slightly darker polychromy.
Instead of depicting a young sorrowful woman, as is often the trend in current models, Duarte sculpted a mature woman with very pronounced features, such as cheekbones or chin. Her eyes, reddened by the pain and anguish endured, are unable to shed more than two tears that slide down her delicate cheeks. Her eyebrows, highly arched, together with her furrowed brow, give her an image of deep drama.
In procession, she appears alone, holding in both hands the crown of thorns of her Son; a rosary also hangs from her left arm. Behind her, the Holy Cross of Mount Calvary, empty, after the lifeless body of the Lord has been taken down, from which hangs a beautiful white lace veil.
Nazarene Habit
Brown tunic and face cover with Franciscan cord.
Notable Insignias
- Guide Cross in wood and silverwork by Villareal (1990).
- Candlesticks and staff in mahogany and bronze, designed by Rafael de Rueda.
The Brotherhood was founded in 1975 in the Parish of San Miguel, being moved the following year to the Parish of Santiago Apóstol.
The church of Santiago Apóstol suffered a severe fire in 1979, which forced the brotherhood to move to the convent of Santa Cruz and, later, to San Pedro, before returning to Santa Cruz in 1991.
The image of Most Holy Mary of Solitude was created by the Sevillian sculptor Luis Álvarez Duarte in 1975.
The image shows a mature woman, with pronounced features and eyes reddened by pain. Her face reflects great drama, representing anguish and suffering.
The Nazareno habit of the brotherhood consists of a brown tunic and face covering, accompanied by a Franciscan rope.
