The Last Supper
Very Marian Sacramental Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception, Holy Rosary and Brotherhood of Nazarenes of Our Father Jesus of Faith in His Last Supper and Holy Mary of the Hope of the Valley.
History
This brotherhood is the only one in the city that worships the Gospel mystery of the institution of the Eucharist and was also the first to settle in the Poniente neighborhood, where it arrived after a long period at the Parish of San Juan and Todos los Santos (Trinidad), from its founding in 1985 until 2000. Although it is currently experiencing a period of splendor, this brotherhood has gone through crises that brought it to the brink of disappearance.
Temple
Parish of San Álvaro de Córdoba. A newly built parish in the modern Poniente neighborhood. It is dedicated to Blessed Álvaro of Córdoba, the Dominican who founded the Scala Coeli convent in the Cordoban hills, from where he led the reform of the preachers after a trip to the Holy Land. He was the one who established the practice of the Stations of the Cross in the West.
The Images
Our Father Jesus of Faith
The image of Our Father Jesus of Faith is the work of Miguel Ángel González Jurado, made in 1993. This image replaced the one made by the sculptor from Puente Genil, Francisco Palos Chaparro, in 1987.
It is a full-body sculpture made of cedar wood, designed to be dressed, presented standing and holding the chalice with both hands. His gaze is directed forward, with a slightly furrowed brow and half-open mouth. His well-crafted beard and hair falling down his back are his most distinctive features. He is dressed in a white tunic and a burgundy velvet mantle, with a gold thread belt.
The mystery is completed with the figures of the apostles, also made by Miguel Ángel González Jurado around 1996. Each apostle was conceived individually and possesses his own specific features, while maintaining a unified vision. Their faces show the drama of the moment, corresponding to the instant when Jesus tells them that one of them will betray him.
Holy Mary of the Hope of the Valley
Although she does not yet participate in processions, she is co-titular of the brotherhood Our Lady of the Valley. Her author is unknown, and it is believed she could be from the 19th century, possibly from the workshop of Juan de Astorga.
It is difficult to carry out a stylistic analysis or chronological assessment, as the state of the image before being restored by Juan Ventura around 1983 is unknown.
She is a candelero-type image, with a straight nose, pronounced chin, and long, straight eyebrows. With fair skin, both her cheeks and the area around her eyes appear reddened, a result of weeping and contained sorrow.
Nazarene Habit
White tunic, with burgundy velvet buttons and face covering, white cape, and white cincture.
