Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba

Córdoba is a bullfighting city in its history and culture. And, as it could not be otherwise, this public place is a clear reflection of such a brilliant part of the history and culture of our city.

The Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba is located in an ancestral Mudejar house from the 16th century, known as “Casa de las Bulas”. It can be accessed through Maimónides Square and it also borders on one side with Judíos Street and Tiberíades Square, a very tourist place in Córdoba.

In 1948 an exhibition on bullfighting art was held in the city, which created a great interest. Another one was organized, some time later, in honour of bullfighter “Machaquito”, in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his becoming a professional. The excitement caused by both exhibitions made Mayor Alfonso Cruz Conde create a local museum to collect that part of history and culture in the city. In March 1953 the mayor bought the “Casa de las Bulas” and appointed a committee of dignitaries to exploit it.

The “Provincial Museum of Popular Art” was opened in May 1954, but, as its name indicates, it was not exclusively dedicated to bullfighting. There were some halls dedicated to cordobán (typical leather from Córdoba) and the embossed leather, to the traditional silversmithing from Córdoba… and even a flamenco dance floor!

As for bullfighting, the museum had a hall exclusively dedicated to mounted bullfighter Antonio Calero, the best one according to some. “El Lagartijo” also had a place of honour, and we can highlight a bronze bust by Mateo Inurria Lainosa. There were also halls dedicated to bullfighters “Guerrita”, “Machaquito” or even “Manolete”, the 4th Caliph of bullfighting. In the hall dedicated to the latter, we could see his first bullfighting suit, the cape, the red cape and the rapier he used the day he fought bull “Islero” in Linares, his last bullfighting.

In the 1970s there was a decline of the museum, which made the bullfighters’ families take many of the objects they had deposited there. It was Julio Anguita who, after valuing the cultural and tourist potential of the building, decided to carry out a broad restoration in the museum.

In 2005 the museum closed, this time with the objective of totally reforming it. It opened again in the spring of 2014, under the name of Bullfighting Museum of Córdoba.

HALLS OF THE MUSEUM

HALL I: Córdoba, a city with a scent of bullfighting

The first of the halls in the museum, located on the ground floor. The visitor will learn all the places of interest in the bullfighting world in Córdoba (monuments, bars, specialised shops, cattle, bull rings…).

HALL II: Bull, bullfighting, and bullfighting culture

In this hall, visitors will enjoy an entertaining video that tries to emphasize the value of the relationship between bullfighter (culture) and the bull (nature) at the moment of the fight.

HALL III: The landscape of the bull.

Already on the first floor we are taken to the fields, the cattle… It is about taking the visitor to where the bull belongs, its natural environment. Let us meet the animal. It is a good moment to let people know the care he receives from the moment he is born until the fight.

HALL IV: Five caliphs, five universes

As we can see from its name, the purpose of this hall is for the city of Córdoba to pay homage to the highest figures of bullfighting; we call them “Five Caliphs”: “Lagartijo”, “Guerrita”, “Machaquito”, “Manolete” and “El Cordobés”, to whom we can add the great mounted bullfighter Antonio Cañero. In this hall the visitor will see explanatory panels of each of the “Caliphs”, as well as some screens where they can be seen in the middle of the bullfight. Bullfighting suits, capes, portraits…

HALL V: The bullfight: liturgy and the festival

This hall imitates a bull ring with all its details… It is about creating the necessary atmosphere for the visitor to feel the reality of the festival. There one will learn everything about the show: the president, the music band…

HALL VI: A long history: Córdoba and bullfighting

As we mentioned in the introduction, Córdoba is a bullfighting city for its history and culture. In this hall, there is a historical tour of the festival in the city, and the relationship between them.

HALL VII: The bullfighting culture: artistic inspiration

We go back to the ground floor and get to the hall where we will see the relationship between bullfighting and art. The bullfighting world has inspired many artists on many occasions, and we can see an example of this in Julio Romero de Torres himself, a great fan of this festival.
