Calleja de las Flores
Just a few meters from the Mosque-Cathedral, on the street dedicated to the illustrious archaeologist Don Ricardo Velásquez Bosco—who, let us remember, restored several of its doorways—we find a small, worn wasp-nest capital embedded in a corner. This capital marks the beginning of the Calleja de las Flores.
An Icon of the City
Over the years, the Calleja de las Flores has become an icon of our city, a typical postcard that tourists seek out to photograph. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most beautiful views that Córdoba has to offer. The Bell Tower, designed by Hernán Ruiz, appears trapped between the rooftops of the whitewashed houses of the old town—a captivating perspective enriched by countless flowerpots that fill the scene with color.
The Calleja de las Flores is one of the most photographed spots in Córdoba.
The houses that once populated the Calleja de las Flores have gradually given way to souvenir shops and other businesses that thrive on tourism, which has, to some extent, altered its original appearance. Even so, it retains enough charm to be considered a place of special interest for anyone wishing to visit Córdoba.
The Square and the Fountain
At the end of the alley opens a small square, which is actually a communal courtyard. There, the famous house No. 2 stands out, perfectly adorned with dozens of flowerpots. The square features a charming fountain that, it seems, was made by Rafael Bernier, a former resident of the area. Octagonal in shape, it has an exceptional basin—ideal for those seeking a place to rest and enjoy a good view.
In the center stands a smooth granite column supporting an old and deteriorated Corinthian capital, which, according to scholars, belongs to the Roman period, specifically from the time of Emperor Hadrian.
A Key Renovation
The alley and the small square have existed since time immemorial, but their current state is due to the renovation carried out by municipal architect Víctor Escribano Ucelay in the mid-20th century, under the mayoralty of Alfonso Cruz Conde. The architect replaced the existing pavement with the typical Cordoban cobblestone, placed granite pieces along the walls as small sidewalks, added a couple of semicircular arches, and whitewashed the walls to enhance the contrast with the green of the flowerpots.
An Unforgettable Moment
I don’t know if many of you know what it is like to be here in the early hours of the morning, in the heart of Cordoban May, when the flowers bring the city to life. Not a soul in the streets of the old town, where silence envelops the Calleja de las Flores—a silence broken only by the singing of birds and the sound of the fountain, while the Cathedral bells ring. Well, now you know…
