C/ Martín de Roa, 7.

Without a doubt, this is a very special stop we’ll make at Patio at Calle Martín de Roa, 7. And I say special because it’s one of those patios that captivate everyone who visits, full of a taste for the old and the fine work of its owners.

A patio with history and life

We’re welcomed by Rosa María Collado, one of its youngest residents. Five families currently live here, she tells us. This patio has been chosen many times to promote the May festivities, such as in a famous RENFE campaign, which used the patio as an image to decorate train stations all over Spain. She shows us newspapers, magazines, postcards, posters… a true collection of incalculable value.

People of all kinds and from all places have enjoyed this unique spot. Rosa highlights the world-famous flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés, the journalist Carlos Herrera, who was enchanted by its beauty; or even the couple formed by bullfighter Enrique Ponce and Paloma Lago, who decided to do a photo shoot right there.

Dolores de la Haba and recognition for her efforts

Rosa constantly mentions Dolores de la Haba, the person who, according to our host, is the main creator of the patio we see today. Dolores was awarded the “Gitanilla de Oro” for her dedicated work in this space.

Description of the patio

An iron gate leads us into the patio, and the first thing that catches our attention upon entering is its zigzag shape, as it is full of nooks and crannies, although this layout makes it very original and doesn’t prevent every corner from being adorned with the typical flowerpots, full of geraniums, gitanillas, roses, hydrangeas… among others. Also adding a distinctive touch are the roofs at different levels, the small balconies also covered in flowers, the little staircase half-hidden among more plants, the whitewashed well, and the outdoor wash basins.

Awards received

Many awards have been received over the years. Notable mentions include the first prize in 1988, second prize in 1993, and honorable mentions in 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2012.
