The Remedy of Souls

Very Humble and Ancient Brotherhood Sacramental of the Most Holy Christ of the Remedy of Souls and Our Lady Mother of God in her Sorrows.

History

It originates from the Brotherhood of Souls founded in the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Mountains in 1537. In 1690, Cardinal Salazar approved the new statutes of the brotherhood. Following the confiscations of the 19th century, the life of the brotherhood declined until its near disappearance, although the devotion of the faithful to its titular Christ continued.

In 1949, a group of faithful came together to reestablish the brotherhood and performed its first penitential procession in 1951. From that first outing, it drew attention that the penitents carried viaticum lanterns instead of candles. The image of Our Lady was incorporated in 1975, and in 1992, the brotherhood was affiliated with the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Temple

Royal Parish of Saint Lawrence the Martyr. The Church of Saint Lawrence stands on the site of an ancient mosque. Founded by Ferdinand III, it is characterized by a three-arched portico and a large rose window. The bell tower, the work of Hernán Ruiz II, rises above the former Arab minaret.

The Titular Images

Most Holy Christ of the Remedy of Souls

The image of the Most Holy Christ of the Remedy of Souls is an anonymous work from the 17th century, restored in 1950 by the sculptor Miguel del Moral. The artist intended to depict Christ taken by surprise by death. With simple yet expressive forms, this archaic crucifix, lacking tension due to postmortem relaxation, turns His head sharply to the right, letting His thick natural hair fall.

The face is a faithful reflection of what occurred—impassive, serene, asleep. The mouth is slightly open, and the beard and mustache are finely worked. At His feet lies the skull and crossed tibias, symbol of death. The cross is arboreal and original, with the titulum in gilded wood. From the crossbeam hangs the veil of darkness, where stars, the sun, and the moon can be distinguished.

Our Lady Mother of God in her Sorrows

The image of Our Lady Mother of God in her Sorrows is an anonymous work from the 17th century. It was acquired in the city of Écija by the brotherhood in 1975, the same year Miguel Arjona carried out its restoration. It is a bust image, with carved face and hands, expressing restrained sorrow through a furrowed brow and slightly parted lips.

Along with the Christ’s float, these are the only floats that process on wheels during Holy Week in Córdoba, without conflicting with the identity of the brotherhood.

Nazarene Habit

Black tunic and face cover, hemp scapular and shoes.
