C/ Postrera, 28.
Rafael Córdoba, a resident of the Alcázar Viejo neighborhood, will be our guide inside the wonderful Patio at Calle Postrera, 28. Not a minute goes by without him fondly mentioning his beloved aunt Dori, the person who took care of the patio before him, and from whom he learned much of what he knows—which is no small amount.
History of the patio
Several archaeologists have dated the house to the 16th century. It was in the 1970s when Rafael’s family acquired the property, and I say the family because it was the entire family that moved in: grandparents, parents, uncles, grandchildren… The patio was the meeting place, the place for celebrations and, ultimately, where all family members lived together.
Description of the patio
The Patio at Calle Postrera, 28 is very small, but that doesn’t make it any less valuable—quite the opposite. We enter through a dark hallway filled with old trinkets. It still preserves the original wooden beams that covered the ceiling, a perfectly whitewashed laundry sink, and the well, which Rafael tells us is half Roman and half Arab, but never dry.
Flora and decoration
In this patio you can find a multitude of floral species such as geraniums, calla lilies, gitanillas, daisies, “espigas del señor”, rose bushes, or the “shrimp flower”… all growing in indigo-colored pots. Regarding the color of the pots, Rafael tells us that Antonio Gala once advised him to change the green to indigo. When Aunt Dori passed away, he decided to follow the writer’s advice and painted them as they are now.
Awards and recognitions
This patio has won numerous awards over the years. Among the most notable are the first prizes won in 1990 and 1997, and the second prizes in 1992, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2006, and 2012, among others. However, what truly fulfilled Aunt Dori was that visitors knew how to appreciate the patio more than any financial reward or prize.
