Tile Gallery

Without a doubt, the Tile Gallery houses one of the most unique collections in the entire Viana Palace. Formed by the Marquis of Laurencín, it consists of a total of two hundred and thirty-six pieces of national ceramics, which give the gallery its name. They date from the 13th to the 19th centuries, clearly showing the evolution of ceramic art over the years. All the pieces are presented with their corresponding wooden frames, featuring heraldic, guild, inquisitorial, and even bullfighting motifs. A complete inventory exists, reproducing by hand each and every piece on display, accompanied by a brief description and documentation.

Featured Furniture in the Room

Among the room’s furniture, four large bronze candelabras, four choir books, lecterns, torch holders, and lanterns stand out. In the center of the Tile Gallery is an exceptional Spanish popular table from the 17th century, with a single-piece tabletop and lyre-shaped legs with stretchers. On it are five large books related to Gregorian chant.

Notable Paintings

Completing the ensemble is one of the most interesting paintings in the Viana Palace: an oil on canvas representing “Saint Diego“, attributed to the Extremaduran painter Francisco de Zurbarán. However, some believe it may be more of a workshop piece than directly from the master of Fuente de Cantos himself—something he regularly practiced, incidentally.

Seating Furniture

We conclude our visit by highlighting two seating pieces. The first is an armchair dated to the late 17th century, decorated in red velvet with curved arms, notable for its use of geometric decorative elements. The second is a piece of exceptional quality: a blue velvet armchair in the Louis XIII style, made in France. Four baluster-shaped turned uprights form the legs, with the front ones extending up to support the arms.
