C/ San Juan de Palomares, 11.

In the heart of the San Lorenzo neighborhood, on Calle San Juan de Palomares, Josefa Gómez Tirado awaits us—the last caretaker of the patio located at number 11, ready to show us one of its charming corners.

Like many other Córdoba patios, it is a former neighbors’ house, which has been cared for and cherished by four generations with the aim of showcasing its beauty and vibrant colors to all who visit.

History and Tradition of the Patio

Josefa Gómez, together with her daughters, kept alive year after year the excitement of making this patio, located on the same street as the old Chapel of San Juan de Letrán, a must-see spot for everyone. Not only because of the great variety of flowers that inhabit the space, but also for preserving one of the most significant examples of popular architecture to be found in the city.

Architecture of the Cordoban Patio

The Patio on Calle San Juan de Palomares features all the essential and indispensable elements of the traditional patio cordobés, such as the classic Córdoba-style pebble mosaic, overhanging roof tiles, the narrow and steep staircase leading to the upper gallery, a wash area with a beautiful basin of Arab tradition, and an old well with a stone curb. No detail is missing.

Vegetation and Flowers

As for the vegetation, in the center of the patio stands an elegant palm tree, and its walls are filled with geraniums, gitanillas (ivy-leaved pelargoniums), irises, carnations, crown of thorns, fuchsias, begonias, globe amaranths, jasmine, bougainvillea…

Awards and Recognitions

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most awarded and recognized patios in the popular contest. In fact, it was part of the very first edition of the contest back in 1933. Throughout its long history, it has won an impressive 38 prizes, including 12 first prizes and 5 second prizes, in addition to receiving distinctions in every single category.

Current Status

Since 2003, it has not participated in the contest due to the passing of its owner, but it reopened in 2010 in the non-competitive category. In 2011, it was closed for renovations and has recently reopened to visitors. It currently serves as the headquarters of the Association of Caretakers of Patios, Grilles, and Balconies “Claveles y Gitanillas”.
