The Stables

The western wall of the Main or Reception Courtyard houses a small door that provides access to the Stables of the Palacio de Viana. It is a rectangular space arranged in three small aisles separated by rows of four semicircular arches each, resting on smooth-shafted columns with Tuscan capitals. The space connects with the exterior through a door that leads to Calle Santa Isabel; the floor is made of traditional Cordoban pebble paving and features no decoration whatsoever.

The central aisle and the carriage

In the central aisle of the Stables, a beautiful 19th-century carriage stands out, decorated with paintings attributed by some to the Valencian artist Mariano Salvador de Maella, and by others to Vicente López. The carriage was acquired in Écija by Don José Saavedra y Salamanca, second Marquis of Viana.

Saddles and historical tradition

To the left of the carriage we find a magnificent Arab saddle, formerly located in the Coffered Ceiling Gallery and, according to popular tradition, it belonged to Boabdil the Young, the last Nasrid sultan of Granada who, in fact, was imprisoned in the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, as we explain in the section dedicated to this exceptional monument.

Mangers and riding equipment

On both sides of the Stables there are a total of twenty-six wooden mangers, with capacity for sixteen horses, above which rises a wooden pedestal displaying seventy-eight pieces including bits, curbs, stirrups, and riding crops from the French and English schools of equitation. On the walls, collections of harnesses, bandoliers, spurs, and other tools for these purposes stand out.

Display cases and heraldic elements

The display cases contain service uniforms from the palace, collections of spurs, spur straps, grooms’ bicorne hats, and other headwear.

Two large heraldic tapestries from the Houses of Viana and de la Roca cover the walls located on either side of the carriage exit door.
